Post 4 (Puerto Rico)

The island of Puerto Rico is fascinating and has so many aspects to address. The history of Puerto Rico is interesting and complex as it has had many people settle and leave the land throughout its lifetime, and the people and cultures that have settled there have helped shaped Puerto Rico into what it is today. According to the Virtual Caribbean Library, "The Taino people were the next significant culture to impact Puerto Rico, arriving between the 7th and 11th centuries"(VCL) after the Ortoiroid  people settled in there for a while, with little being known about their impact on Puerto Rico, the Taino people left a huge mark on the island and had settled there until the arrival of the Spanish people in the late 1400s. The culture of Puerto Rico is made up of many different cultures mixed together. It possesses a mixture of African, Spanish, European, and American cultures. According to Wikipedia, "Since establishment as an unincorporated territory of the United States in 1898, traditional economics, social structure, nationalism, and culture has been affected in Puerto Rico" (Wikipedia)the United States claiming Puerto Rico has had a large impact on their culture as well as their economy. The political aspect of Puerto Rico is similar to the United States in the sense that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US, however, "Puerto Rico adopted its own constitution in 1952, which adopted a commonwealth relationship with the U.S." (New World Encyclopedia). Puerto Rico was a territory when the United States first settled there, but then they formed their own constitution which let them form into a commonwealth, which allowed them to have something similar to their own government.
